I'm reaching out on behalf of my entire family.  The work that you all are doing for pancreatic cancer is reaching so many people.   My family has been impacted by pancreatic cancer so this race and cause is important to me.  I've shared the video of the progress that is being made in pancreatic cancer research with my family.  We are inspired and grateful. Thank for everything that you are doing. Sincerely, Brian  (Submitted in memory of Geraldine Brown, Celeste Brown & Clive Brown.  All three (3) were pancreatic cancer patients that raised me).

My heart hurts for your family's loss. My brother has just been diagnosed with this terrible disease and as I anticipate what his short future will bring and the eventual loss of him I can't help but empathize with you.

Blessings to you and your family. May God be with you.

We are looking forward to the race again this year!  I was out here to pass on the race information to a few friends recently and figured I would make a quick post.  This whole event is awesome.  Erin, Lisa and all involved with making this possible, your sister would be so very proud.  ...I am proud just to know all of you.

See you soon!

Boy is this a shock! I was driving through Harrisburg this past weekend and saw a lawn sign for this 5k and decided to look it up because I like to keep myself informed.  I was sad to see that it was about Rachel Guss.  My deepest condolences to her family and friends. I didn't know her, I only knew her in passing.  We went to high school together, I think I was a year or two ahead of her. And we both worked at GIANT.     What I remember of her, was her smile.     In a torn apart world, I think it is nice to remember people's smiles.

I never knew Rachel. I actually found this race while browsing for local 5Ks and decided to read Rachel's story. I am so glad that I did, because it touched my heart for a few reasons. I am 24, soon to be 25 and a hopeful occupational therapy student. I am a daughter, friend, niece, granddaughter and so on; My heart goes out to each one of Rachel's family members and friends. This is the age that we are starting out, pursuing our dreams and goals, and I truly cannot imagine the thought of facing cancer at such a young age. Rachel's story is inspiring, because where many people would take this news and give up hope, she strived to accomplish what the majority of people told her was impossible.    The other reason why I feel that participating in this race is so important is the fact that I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer 5 months ago. We did not know that he even had cancer until weeks before his passing. I am honored and beyond excited to take part in an event to celebrate the lives of people like Rachel and my dad and also to keep fighting for a cure.

I never met Rachel but through a friend I know her now... like all of thouse who met her, I also ask "why" these things happen to nice people like Rachel, my mother in law, my parents' best friends' daughter, etc. But the truth is that they all had something in common, they had the ability to impact lives! I hope our contributions to this good cause will help us find answers and keep more angels around...

When I think of Rachel, I\'m reminded of a her contagious smile and that long, beautiful blonde hair. A memory that always comes to mind when I think of Rachel was that she was a trivia extraodinaire. Every time we had a cousins\' game night, she always knew the artist or name of a song, quote from a movie or fact we couldn\'t remember. When in doubt, we always asked Rachel, she knew! I think of Rachel often and her positive spirit is something I will always carry with me. Rachel challenges me to live my life as positive and selfless as she lived her life.

I met Rachel in 7th grade.  We both on the gold team, in the same homeroom and study hall. In fact, I think Rachel and I had almost every class together that year.  I have many memories from Jr High and most of them involve Rachel. I still have notes we wrote back and forth during Mr. Neidlinger\'s not so exciting Social Study\'s class.  And I remember inside jokes we shared during Mr. Leiter\'s math class.  One of my fondest memories was right after I had scoliosis surgery.  Rachel not only came to see me in the hospital, but came over one night when I returned home.  I had barely been successful walking to the kitchen but Rachel encouraged me to try and walk to the mailbox and back.   I was very hesitant-- my driveway was fairly long and I wanted to stop and turn around multiple times.  Rachel assured me I could keep going.   Though a walk down the driveway may seem insignificant to some, Rachel knew it was a big deal for me and did not demean the feat. She believed I could do it and was right by my side to accomplish this step in my recovery.  Years later when I learned she was going to school for Occupational Therapy, I knew it was the perfect career choice as I thought back to that time.  Rachel was caring, compassionate and patient.

Happy Birthday Rachel!  Rachel and I first met in Mr. Sanderson’s homeroom / history class in 9th grade. She was my first new high school friend that I didn’t go to elementary school or junior high with.  We came up with nicknames for each other (Kelli and Kandi).  Her name stuck – and fortunately mine didn’t.    We also had a notebook that we would write each other notes in every day and pass it to each other between classes that discussed our high school crushes and gossip.  Once we got our driver’s license, we would meet at Brightbill park to just chat and swing.

I knew right away how special Rachel was and what a good friend I have found.   During our high school days when we would watch our favorite shows together, Rachel would always bring over some type of baked good.   I was spoiled by her love for baking.   She didn’t have to bring anything over—we were just hanging out like usual.  But that was her; always taking the time to think about others or how to make someone smile.   Her thoughtfulness, caring nature, and selflessness was one of kind.  Before I went on Semester at Sea, Rachel made a special journal not only for me to keep my thoughts in but she put gossip magazine articles of our favorite celebrities, her own crossword puzzle using our inside jokes, Sudoku, our favorite sayings, an encouraging poem, and a CD of some of our favorite songs to get me through the long days away from home.

During her summer in Virginia Beach for school, I went down to visit her for the weekend.  I left after work and it was quite a long drive.  I ate a few snacks on the way but didn’t eat dinner.  Rachel said we can go grab pizza when I got there.   As soon as I walked in the door, she had my favorites sitting on the coffee table; Pizza Hut pizza and milk.  I was thrilled – but not surprised because that is who she was.

When David and I moved in together, she brought over a beautiful tulip to plant in our yard as a housewarming present.  We planted the flower and it blooms every year.  It sits right outside our gate and it warms my heart every year when it blooms.  It is again, a reminder of Rachel – her thoughtfulness, kindness, and warm heart.

Rachel has inspired me to be a better person.  To be more thoughtful and caring towards others.  To go the extra mile or make the extra effort   – even though to her it just came natural.  Thinking about her strength and courage reminds me that no challenge is too tough and to dig deep in yourself and your faith for support.

She was thee best friend anyone could ever ask for.   I love you Kell!  Happy Birthday. Miss you. Xoxo Britt

Whenever I picture Rachel in my mind, I always see her as a kid in her bathing suit at the pool. Bleach blonde hair and a smile.  She will always remain that fun-loving little girl that constantly pestered Erin and I as we played! Happy Birthday, Rachel!

Rachel and I met in 2nd grade. We spent so much time together, people were confusing us as sisters! Elementary school to High School and after, we remained friends.
I could say a million and one things about Rachel\'s determination, selflessness, amazing strength and courage....
Rachel was a life-long friend who will always have a special place in my heart and memories. She has taught me to appreciate what you have today and if you just believe in yourself, you can do anything!

Happy Birthday Rachel ♥

I think it is no coincidence that I bought my first house yesterday (10/22)  with the help of Rachel\'s signs from Heaven.  She showed up at a time when I needed a little happiness and the path to buying my house went smoothly from there.  I also think it is no coincidence that I am buying a dog tomorrow (10/24).  That gives us a whole day to thank Rachel for everything she has shown us down here.  Our dog\'s name will be Reggie Guss in her honor.

There are so many funny memories I have of Rachel but the ones that stand out are how she and Kelsey used to dress up Colin (Kelsey\'s younger brother) in girls clothing and take pictures. We also had lots of fun on the drive to basketball games, singing and dancing in the car.  Swimming at Mountainview Pool, Kelsey and Rachel would swim under water and sneak up on me and pinch my ankles and swim away.  They thought it was the funniest thing since I usually pretended I didn\'t know who did it!

Rachel, you are always in our thoughts and will forever be in our hearts.  Happy Birthday to Heaven\'s sweetest angel.

I met Rachel my freshman year of high school, and from there we became very close friends.  When I think of Rachel, many adjectives come to mind.  But above all, I will always remember her for her kindness and selflessness.  I have a picture in my cube at work of Rachel and all our girlfriends before Rachel moved to Virginia one summer.  Whenever I am having a bad day or think that things are going poorly, I always take a moment to look at Rachel\'s vibrant smile.  It helps me to remember to smile, and it reminds me that I have Rachel watching from above.  Rachel has inspired me to be the best person I can be and always try to be kind and good hearted.  Happy Birthday!

My friendship with Rachel began what seems like many years ago in the 5th grade. We both played basketball together for PBA and I knew from the first day my mom introduced me to her that we were going to be great friends. Rachel and I kept in touch through out junior high and met back up together in high school where many sleep overs, parties, dances, football games, inside jokes, and celebrations took place. I always enjoyed Rachel’s company because she always knew how to have a good time and could always put a smile on my face. You could trust Rachel with anything and you could count on her to be there without even asking. Rachel has inspired me to become a better person in so many ways with her warm heart, her beautiful smile and her ability to always give to others. This past year Rachel has inspired me to become a healthier person and to get back into shape. I never thought in a millions years I could run three miles consistently several times a week and reach my goal weight that I wanted so badly. Sounds easy to most, but to me it was a huge deal and with Rachel smiling down on me every stride I took, I knew I could do it and to never give up! Rachel was truly a beautiful person inside and out. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. Happy Birthday to you Kel!

I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t know the Guss girls, specifically Rachel.  We enjoyed family vacations to the Jersey shore where we had our summer crushes Ronnie and Dave, played doorbell Dixie in the hotels, and carelessly played in the waves while admiring our cooler, older sisters.  We shared memories of our strong Christian upbringing and NOT going to church camp and quite possibly hiding in the choir room during Sunday school.  Rachel was a major part o the innocent memories, laughter and happiness of my childhood.   Over the years and into our adult lives, Rachel’s friendship never faded.  Her kind heart was immeasurable in numerous occasions, but one that I will never ever forget happened during the summer after Rachel’s diagnosis.  In an extremely fragile time in her life, Rachel reached out to me during what she thought was a tough time in mine.  Despite all that she was going through, I could never thank her enough or understand why she would do something like that for me, then I remembered the type of person that she was; selfless: concerned more with the needs of others than with one\'s own.

I think of Rachel very often. The slightest things will trigger a memory or remind me of her. No matter what it is though, when I picture her in my mind, she is smiling.

The impact Rachel has had on my life is one that I will carry with me forever. I consider it to be a gift, a constant a reminder of how strong, motivating, persistent, genuine, and thoughtful she was.

Be it the way I treat others or handle an unfavorable situation, I will remember Rachel’s knack for using life’s challenges as a way to strengthen some part of her being (faith/character). Guss,Rachel was full of grace. It is something we could all exercise a little of once in a while. J

As Rachel would know all too well I\'m not the greatest story teller but here\'s a few things I recall when thinking of Rachel..

1) I always described her to friends, meeting her for the first time, as Miss Congeniality, and still do.  As much as an inspiration she is each day in my life, those are big shoes to try and live up too.

2)  There’s a story I wish I could locate again but here’s my best shot… This family had to put their beloved dog down after many years.  The parents decided to let the boy watch, which he did.  Afterwards, the family told the boy it was okay to be sad, as he showed little emotion.  The boy replied he believed dogs don’t live as long as people because God put everyone, or every animal, on this earth to make others happy; be there to comfort and lift their spirits, and learn to love everyone for who they are.  He continued, well dogs greet you and say bye to you every day.  They are there with no words just love when you’re having a bad day; and even on your worst days they love and cherish you for you.  So dogs don’t live as long because they accomplish this sooner.  …I wish every day Rachel was still healthy and in each one of our lives because I know how much she made it better, however, it is what it is and she would want us to accept that.  This story reminds me that Rachel may have had a short time with us here because she had accomplished all these things throughout her life, and with such grace I still find indescribable.  Needless to say, she continues to lead us on to making these same great strides day after day.

3) Ohh Rachel, your Freshman year in college.. this time that year, we celebrated your birthday.  And what a fine birthday it was.  I remember us going to the bathroom and locking the door to call your sisters and our cousins to share the fun times we were having and wishing they were there with us.  I remember teaching you to pee outside and you dropping your phone in it.  I remember our starry walk home as we would talk about how crazy people were and these were some of the best days of our lives.  This is one of many memories I have of the fun, outgoing, carefree but caring, and easy to talk to person you were…

I wish Heaven had a phone so I could hear your voice again.. I thought of you today, but that is nothing new.  I thought about you yesterday and days before that too.  I think of you in silence, I often speak your name.  All I have are memories and a picture in a frame.  Your memories are a keepsake, from which I’ll never part.  God has you in his arms..  I have you in my heart.  <3

As Rachel’s mother, I have been blessed and honored to make so many memories with Rachel.  I cherish each and every one.

One of my favorite memories was of Rachel as a toddler.  I can still picture Rachel in my mind’s eye standing in front of her first and highest mountain, the sofa.   Determined to get to the top, she faced the sofa, leaned her tummy against it, and swung with all her might to land that chubby little foot on the edge of the cushion.  Slow and steady Rachel swung her heavy, little leg resulting in a sudden plop to the floor.  Finally, after minutes of pursuit her cute little rubber-tipped sneaker caught hold of the cushion.  Rachel leaned forward ever so carefully, made her way to the back of the sofa, and turned around with a smile from ear to ear.  (Determination)

Another fond memory was Rachel’s first time off the diving board.  At 4 years old, Rachel made her way to the diving board at the deep end of the pool.  Her sisters and Crawdad friends ran ahead of her giggling with excitement.  Rachel eyed the board that hung 5 feet above the water and started climbing the steps.  She stood perfectly still for a minute,  then step by step Rachel made her way to the edge of the diving board.  After what seemed forever to fellow crawdads waiting patiently behind her, Rachel threw her arms up to Heaven and plunged into the water.  Her fans cheered they were so proud of her. Quickly she bobbed to the top and with the brightest smile, doggie paddled to the ladder eager to do it all again.  (Courage)

A more recent memory of Rachel was at the Harrisburg Marathon.  At 50, I decided to run my last marathon.  Typical of my family, they went to the race to support me.  And thoughtful Rachel, made a play list of inspirational songs for me to listen to on my iPod to lighten the road before me.  Each of the Guss Girls decided to run a part of the race.   The portion of the 26.2 Harrisburg Marathon I dreaded the most, was running across the steel bridge over the Susquehanna River.  Swaying with all the runners so high above the river with her encouraging, warm, loving, and confident smile, Rachel ran by my side.  You may wonder what is so special about that.  Rachel was afraid of heights.  But there wasn’t anything Rachel wouldn’t do for those she loved. (Love)

Rachel has always been by my side and now is in my heart.  A line from a quote by E.E. Cummings “I carry your heart.  I carry your heart in my heart.  I am never without you.”  Rachel is always with me.  And the last line from Rachel’s Sisters Essay,    “ My sisters remind me of who I am and where I come from.  This line reminds me of whose we are and where our true home is.

I don\'t have too much to say other than that Rachel was one of the nicest, most genuine people that I ever was lucky enough to call a friend.  I am not always the best person when it comes to keeping in touch with friends, and with Rachel it was almost an afterthought.  We would always call/text/chat each other out of the blue to catch up, and it would be like nothing had changed.  After we went to college, we would always make time to meet-up when we were back home, even if it was only for a few minutes.  None of this changed after she was diagnosed, and that is a testament to Rachel\'s character.  I really miss her and wish her family all of the best.

I have so many wonderful memories of Rachel.  My absolute favorite happened during a party that Ben and Chris were having at the Baker house.   Soemtime during the party, Rachel and I thought it would be fun to disapear with their 100 lb male rottweiler Boston and give him a makeover.  20 minutes later, Boston emerged from the bathroom with hot pink nails, and he was so proud of himself.  The entire night Rachel and I kept making comments like "Oh isn\'t Boston the most beautiful dog ever?"  And of course Ben and Chris would agree, but they were both so clueless to his hot pink nails.  When they finally noticed they got so mad at us.  I will never forget how funny and clever we thought we were that night. Not a day goes by that I don\'t think of Rachel.  I am inspired by her compassion for others and her selflessness.  I close my eyes and see her beautiful smile and think of the laughs we shared during the short time I knew her.  I am so blessed to have known Rachel and will never forget the joy she brought into my life and the life of so many others.

One of my fondest times with Rachel were the many 4th of July celebrations that we spent at the Whitmoyer\'s house. Hours spent swiming, running around playing imaginary games, and of course, sparkelers! It was always a great time spent with my second cousins! Rachel has inspired me to shake off the little things and give my all to what truly matters in life. One day while carpooling home from high school, we were rear-ended in the parking lot. What was Rachel\'s first reaction? To calmly reply that she was fine, and everything was okay. Of course my reaction was the complete opposite, but I learned something from her that day: how I want to live my life. When I don\'t feel like going into work, I think of Rachel and strive to be the type of occupational therapist that she wanted to be. Rachel is my inspiration every day to be a better person!

There are many things about Rachel that I will never forget but the best ones happened in the summer of 2009. We lived in Williamsburg, VA together to complete our first level 2 fieldwork at good ol\' eastern state hospital. From happy hour appetizers at UNOs to ice cream runs at ChickfilA... From beach days to work days... From poker nights to disco dances for the residents... From her conniving with my fiancé to help him surprise me for my birthday to her making me rum cake in a flower pot... I\'ll never forget her smile and laugh :) I\'m honored to be able to wear a shirt with her name on it and run with her in mind. She was a good motivator in the summ of 2009. She continues to be a powerful motivator for me now...

I\'m not sure when exactly I met Rachel, but I believe we became friends somewhere between being on Class Council together and sitting next to each other in Mr. Heckman\'s Driver\'s Ed.  Rachel holds a good chunk of my memory from high school into college.  I\'ll never forget our more innocent days of driving the hills in Linglestown and staying at her grandmother\'s house (where she explained with a very serious face that the reason for the small furniture and low ceiling upstairs was that her grandpa was a little person).  Our not so innocent days are a little harder to remember, proof that we enjoyed ourselves (sometimes a little too much).  Rachel was one person who always seemed to be there to help me pick up the pieces of my life that I too often managed to let fall to the ground.  She was a huge insipiration in my life for many years, not in a singular instance but in many different small ways that have made a profound impact on my life - I have always admired Rachel.. for her loving & caring friendship, maturity and confidence, intelligence and sense of humor, and most recently for her strength and courage.   She has always and still does make me want to be a better person.

My family came to know the wonderful, strong, amazing, beautiful, loving Guss family when Hadley was in second grade at Linglestown Elementary School with Mrs. Guss.  You are an inspiration to us that will never fade from our lives.  Rachel\'s brave battle and never give up spirit continue to inspire us - but side by side with her heroic example is the unending love of a family.  You strengthen our faith because we can see, though your amazing example, that Rachel continues on through your love. The sunshine that is Rachel and your beautiful family is the surest proof of Heaven, a true imprint of the love of God on earth. You are an example for us to follow, strong in your love, brave in the face of loss, solid in your faith, and honest in your humanity. Thank you for sharing your sunshine!

I am blessed to have been inspired by so many people in my life...most of them have been very close family members. My Grandmother Rolston lived with cancer most of her life....I never heard her complain one time...she accepted what came her way with total grace and dignity.  It was her strong will to live life and not dwell on cancer that taught me valuable lessons when I was diagnosed with cancer.  I would approach each day with a happy thought and force cancer to take a back seat. Many people in my life have been diagnosed with the "C" word....my father, 2 cousins, a brother-in-law, a good friend.  The most difficult to understand was the diagnosis of Rachel.  She was my youngest niece just starting her adult life.  I always knew she would lite the way and that she did:)  She would light up a room with her  smile...it was contageous..she would put that smile on everyone\'s face she came into contact with. Rachel was the most courageous person I have ever known.  It was never about her, she always wanted to know about others....even when they were doing things that she loved and was unable to do.  Her stamina and determination never faultered ... this was something that she possessed from the time she was a little girl.  I now greet each day with a smile and end each day with a smile...Rachel\'s smile blessed us all !!!!

When I think of how Rachel inspires me there are so many ways, I could never list them all. She was my sister so I had the distinct privilege of being as close to her as another person could possibly be. I often wish things would have turned out differently but they didn\'t. I often think of things I wish I could change then I remember that none of that matters now. All that matters is that she was my sister and she was fantastic! The kind of fantastic that inspires me to throw a little more good into the universe in an attempt to be a smidge as fantastic as she was.

I went to school with Rachel at Elizabethtown College for occupational therapy and was lucky enough to have her as a partner our graduate year for our research study. We put many hours into our research, but what I remember most about that time is how we would always find a way to have a good laugh. You couldn’t be in a room with Rachel for too long without smiling. We even had an inside joke about mustaches that entire year; I don’t even know what started it. But when I ran the 5k in her honor in Harrisburg this year, I remember a jogger running by me with the largest handlebar mustache I’ve ever seen and I couldn’t stop smiling as my eyes teared up for that moment. She was honestly the sweetest person I ever met; you couldn’t find one bad thing about her. Her smile was contagious, and her laugh infectious. When I saw her once she was sick she was always her lovable and caring self, going about her situation with tremendous courage and grace for her age that some people don’t experience for their entire lifetime. And when we presented our research at the American Occupational Therapy Association’s conference in Philadelphia in April 2011, she wouldn’t miss it! I remember being so proud to have her as my partner that day, but even more proud to have been able to call her a dear friend. I am blessed to have known Rachel, and I think of her often…whether I’m treating patients or running at the gym to get ready for the next 5k, she is a constant reminder never to take my health, friends, or family for granted.
R.I.P. Rachel.

What I remember most about Rachel is that she always had a smile on her face. The few times I saw her after graduation while she was in the heart of her battle she ALWAYS had a smile on her face. She also always made sure to go out of her way to ask how I was doing despite all that she was going through. Now, as an OT who works with pediatric cancer patients I am continually amazed by their ability to smile and play through all of it. It makes anything I\'m going through seem so small and has made me so much more patient and kind as I go through life. Having known Rachel reminds me to treat my patients not for their disease, but for the loving, caring people they are and the family and friends who stand behind them. I will forever remember her grace, caring spirit, and the smile that was always there.

I am cousins with Eric Murr and grew up with Erin throughout my life. I met Rachel once or twice before Eric and Erin\'s wedding. I remember each encounter I made with Rachel because she would be all smiles and compliment me on something. I was lucky to be a bridesmaid in Erin\'s wedding and my memory of Rachel is from the few short hours before the wedding. I was sitting on a stool in Erin\'s room with all the bridesmaids, watching Erin get ready. Rachel came and sat right down next to me. She just started talking to me. She was the most outgoing person I have come to pass, and I had only shared a few moments with her before she passed. That day she asked me about school, boys, and encouraged me that I didn\'t have to take a shot of the flask that was being passed around. I told her that I wanted to take a drink, since all of the bridesmaids were doing so, and that\'s how I learned how to drink from a flask haha. She showed me how in one quick motion and was all for it! She continued to sit with me. She sat with me because she knew I was much younger than the rest of the bridesmaids. It meant so much to me, that tiny favor she did. I\'ll forever say that the little things are what gets us by each and everyday. But the little thing that Rachel did, just sitting with me minutes before the wedding, meant so much more to me. It\'s a tiny memory, and nothing huge, but Rachel\'s personality will always be remembered. I remember her for how kind she was, when she didn\'t even have to be.

My dear friend Rachel.  I have known Rachel since PBA basketball and got to know her in 7th Grade at East Jr.  From the minute we met she has inspired me. She always had a calm peaceful presence; so different than me.  Regardless of how different we were, she never judged me. She loved me for me; which is so rare these days.  September 22, 2001, we were freshmen in high school at CD.  My dad was called overseas for the 1st time after the towers fell.  Rachel went with us to the base to say goodbye to my dad. As my dad was leaving he kissed us all; told my sisters and I to take care of my mom; and kissed Rachel and told her to take care of his girls.  She kept her promise to him for years to come. After she was diagnosed, the inspirations kept on coming.  I have never met anyone so strong. I just love her.  I think of her multiple times day and am a better person because of her.  Only Rachel would keep a promise to my dad for 11 years.  I thank God everyday that Rachel is my friend.

I met Rachel when we were young girls living on the rough (yeah right) streets of West Hanover.  There weren\'t too many young girls that lived in our neighborhood and so the Guss girls were a natural fit especially because there were three of them; Erin, Lisa, and Rachel and three of us; Melissa, Julie, and Erin (me).  I think we all met through Julie and Lisa who became instant BFFs in school (I\'m sure they bonded over middle child syndrome) and we all swam on the same swim team together (Go Crawdads!).  Our moms got to know each other over carpool arrangements and managing families of such hotness as were the Guss Girls and the McKenna Sisters.  I was a little older than Rachel (I think maybe by 4 years), but we were both the youngest and so when we would go to play with the Guss Girls the older sisters would try to pawn me off on Rachel (and her onto me).  I was so insulted because she was obviously a baby and I thought I was a woman and I wanted to hang with the big girls too.  I\'m sure I wasn\'t too nice to her but she never skipped a beat and was always smiling and willing to play each time I came over or saw her at the pool.  (It must be stated that the strongest memory I have of Rachel is of her at the pool, rocking a one piece, her hair wet and matted with tufts of dry chlorine green hair sticking out all over the place, and of course, with that classic great big grin on her face.)  We later talked about my evil years when I fought tooth and nail to hang out with the older Guss Girls instead of her.  Rachel stated with a laugh, "You were so mean to me!" and I said "I know!  I\'m SO sorry.  I\'ve been carrying the guilt for years!"  She just laughed it off which I took as forgiveness and we carried on.

Rachel and I actually crossed paths many times in life.  As mentioned, I met her as the younger sister of my older sister\'s BFF and then later as the best friend of my best friend\'s (Jenna Class) sister, Leah.  Jenna and I had so much fun trying to corrupt those little girls and we all had a blast playing together (when us cool, older girls allowed it).  One of my favorite memories of all times is of going skinny dipping in the Class\' swimming pool.  We all thought that the initial dive in caused the "coolest" feeling of cold water against dry skin.  So, to recreate this moment, we decided that we would dry off by running around Jenna\'s big backyard stark naked and then proceed to dive into the pool.  We spent a good part of the afternoon, diving into the pool, crawling out, running butt naked around the backyard, diving in again (or using the slide) and repeating the process over and over again.  I guess nudity is a theme in our friendship because I\'ll also never forgot the time that us four girls saw a naked guy for the first time in a movie.  We kept rewinding and pausing and slow-moing, all the while rolling on the floor laughing our butts off.

I have so many great memories of Rachel yet I cannot sum up her inspiration in one statement that she made, one gesture, one moment.  All I can say is that if you would ask anyone who knew her, they would all say that she carried a light, a warmth, all of her life.  This memory of Rachel is not one that came after her passing.  Like how they say we only remember the best of people once they\'re gone.  I always thought of Rachel that way because there only was the best of Rachel in my memory.  This is the inspiration that I got-that I get-from Rachel.  For me, what can be more inspiring than to hope that I might one day impress that kind of memory on others.  The kind of memory that exists in perfection because it is the only memory that ever existed.  Nothing can be more inspiring than the hope to leave a Rachel Guss kind of impression.

I taught Rachel how to decorate cakes during the years we spent working together in the bakery at Giant. We often joked that she was my Jedi, and I was her Yoda. What a pleasure she was to work with every day! I learned a lot about her in the hours and hours we spent working side by side, and I can\'t remember ever seeing her without a smile. I often remember thinking how vibrant she was...what a light she had. I spoke with her shortly before her passing, and she sounded so wonderful and upbeat. Her years were short, but her impact on those who knew her was huge. I look forward to Running for Rachel as an annual event...although this year I will be pushing a double stroller, so I hope I don\'t hold up all the pros! :) Love ya, Chaw.

I was classmates with Rachel at Elizabethtown College. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of Rachel while I work as an occupational therapist. Whenever I feel tired and don\'t want to go to work, or when I have a particularly challenging patient, I always think that Rachel didn\'t get this opportunity. She undoubtedly makes me be a better therapist and a more caring person. I know Rachel would have made an amazing OT and I use her as an inspiration every single day to do that much more for my patients. To stay the extra 5 mins to hear a story or make sure my patient has a full water pitcher. To not frown when a patient needs to use the bathroom.  I often bring her up to my co-workers as well and they too seem to be touched by her life and do that little bit more. I think God everyday that I was privileged to know Rachel and can\'t wait to see my friend someday in eternal life.

I am deeply saddened to hear about Rachel. A great classmate and friend, she was one of the first people I ever met in our freshman Occupational Therapy class.

She always had a positive attitude and never stopped smiling.

I pray for you and the rest of the family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely, Derek

My daughter Allison Swink was a friend of Rachel\'s at West Hanover Elementary School. I am so saddened to hear of the recent news, but I am so uplifted to see and hear of such a differance Rachel made to so my people-family, friends, and in the field of Occupational Therapy. (Allison studied OT at Ithaca College and graduated last year too)
